Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine Online, is an anime style game, based on the Megami Tensei universe, is an MMORPG hosted by Aeria Games. (http://megaten.aeriagames.com/) It is usually abbreviated with the name, Megaten. Anyway, onto the storyline. In the late 1990’s human kind started to dive into the realm of science fiction. One of which technologies, were teleporters. During one of the tests, the subject disappeared from the first teleporter, but never appeared on the other side. Instead, creatures that were to become known as demons started to emerge form the other side. The humans could not stop the creatures, and soon the globe was overrun by these ‘demons’. The demons caused turmoil across the globe; some masqueraded as saviors or bringers of change, influencing man one way or another to destruction. While a few learned of this truth and fought against it, they were too late. Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles were launched across the globe and the world as man knew it was wiped out in the blink of an eye. But this was not the end. In the events after what was later known as the Great Destruction, a new world was taking form. After many years of fighting, it was said a young man caused a tidal wave, which swept over Japan, ridding it of the demons. The remaining humans made peace, and together made underground shelters, known as “homes”. Years later, humans decide they want to retake the surface, and as there first step out of the darkness, build a tower. As soon as the towers construction is complete, three strange towers emerge from the ground, in a triangle around the tower, and the demons start to return. The tower has come to be known as Sinjuku Babel.
First off, I really like this game. It reminds me of Monster ranchers, in that you can capture monsters, they help you fight, and they not only evolve, but you can fuse them together to create cool new creatures. You get to play the role of a rookie Demon Buster (DB). The Demons Busters protect humans, and the ‘homes’ from demon attacks. There isn’t a lot of character customization, one or two sets of cloths for different level groups, a couple of different hair styles, and three sizes of character to choose from. (Child, teen, or adult.) Its quest system gets a little annoying from time to time. The NPC that sends you on a quest, will show you where you need to go, once, and if you don’t catch it, you get to go searching the general area they give you, for the NPC you need to find.
On the monster front, it’s pretty simple. The monsters have there own certain attributes. Some will attack with you, some will attack whenever they want, and some will defend you, ect. Also, there are many different types of creatures. The first few that you meet, include pixies, and… essentially a purple puss in boots. (Yes, from Shrek) Later on in the game, you will also be able to ride some of your higher level monsters, such as a dog type monster, Called Cerberus. Though it does share its name with a certain three headed dog, it only has one head, and for a good part of the game, you will have a wounded Cerberus following you around. But if you want to find out why, your gonna have to try out this game.
