The Canaan series comes to an end in the 13th and final episode. The bomb that is on the train car with Maria goes off and Canaan senses something big just happened. Oddly her Synesthesia power greatly increases and she begins to kick the mighty Alphards ass … effortlessly. She is surprisingly calm, as she senses that Maria is still alive (so am not sure where this extra power is coming from .. if not rage). Yun-Yun somehow ran after the car that Maria was on, and saved her from the bomb …?
The fight between Canaan and Alphard continues and moves up to the top of the train. Alphards goes on and on about this light, and that light, and Canaan finally says that Maria is not her light, but her friend. Alphard laughs at that and tries escaping with her military helicopter but Canaan downs the copter and gives Alphard the ultimate beat down until tshe falls off of the train … only to be caught by Canaan. Canaan tells her that her light changes, that her heart is dead, and that she will not be doing anymore killing. This seems to piss Alphard off, as she yells that she will “free herself from this snake for forever” and blows her arm off and falls …
Mino finds Yun-Yun and Maria in the desert and brings them back to town to get treated. By the time useless Maria wakes up Yun-Yun is already gone and is busy with yet another new job (whats with her anyways?). Maria goes on about the same “I want to walk beside Canaan” bullshit that she’s been rambling on about the entire series .. Mino makes a career change from journalist to a cheezy romance novel writer .. and the series winds up with Maria at an art show.
It’s hard to believe this series was only 13 episodes .. it seems like it’s been going for forever, but I’m glad this snorefest is finally over. I kept thinking “it will get better, it’ll pick up” .. I could barely stay awake through the final episode. I thought it was interesting that Alphard somehow survived falling off of the train (wtf?) as it shows a mysterious one armed burnette at the airport. The last scene was kind of cool at Maria’s art gallery (??) as it showed a pictureAlphard & a picture of Canaan with one title that read “Canaan” (cheeeezballll).
All in all – this series bored the hell out of me and was slightly confusing .. probably due to my lack of motivation to even attempt to look beyond the surface. There were NO characters that I really liked, MANY characters that really annoyed me (Maria, Yun-Yun, Liang, ect.) and I don’t think there was one episode that really made me feel .. anything? The best part of the Canaan anime series was the crazy j-pop loving taxi driver. I will say that this series did have it’s moments, hence not dropping it mid way through .. but overall just did not deliver.

slightly confusing? I hope that’s ironic. This was confusing as hell and I doubt its possible to look beyond the surface. The reason why Alphard killed her and Canaan’s Tutor is still unknown. Fact is she blames Canan for his Death. In the last episode(12th) this Anime really made me believe, that Canaan is the one to blame, because her powers have some manipulating sideeffect. I thought Alphard was the good one, judging from how calm and considerate she acted. (even though i was wondering why the hell shes putting her sister through all the hardships of driving mad when she could just shoot her)
Well, here is one idea about what this is all about: Alphard sees herself in some sort of competition with Canaan about who is the better soldier. She envys her for her Power because she knows no matter how good she is she cant compensate this. Thats why she HAS to kill the source of her power, Canaans light, their Tutor.
To determine who of both rightfully bears the name Canaan, does requires her to do so. (therefore she does what her Tutor tells her not to do in his dying moment: She puts personal desire over the Objective==> lonlyness / death of Heart?)
A bit strange in this whole story is the name Canaan (Hope) which is given to both by a soldier: Hes hoping for what? A Killing machine? Or just to bring up someone capable of surviving? Even weirder than when alphard implements the name despair. Despair to whom? First i thought this to be realated to Jeans(Tutor) Intention, when he picked the name Canaan: Jean thought she was hope, but in truth she was despair.
This would imply some idealistic reference.
but this doesnt really make sense so it must some other aspect, picked by alphard, from a different point of View, refering to something else.
f.e: she brought despair to me by being such an unsurpassable soldier.
I think if they pick names like despair and Hope for characters in animes they should make clear what they are refering to, otherwise the symbolic is totally screwed up and you can think of almost anything just as i am doing now. Waste of Thought since u have no clues

The first half of this episode was alright; doesn’t explain a whole lot about the situation or whether if Alphard let go of her past, but at least there was some good action. I pretty much ignored everything that Maria (and Minoru) said in the last half.
A disappointing non-ending…

@ QRFSQ – Sorry, I really meant “super f***king confusing” …. ha and I wasn’t interested enough to come up with theories like you just did … good points though :)

I actually think the anime was rather straightforward for what it set out to do. It clearly wasn’t the type of anime where they just throw all the information at you or a dull anime where nothing is going on and everything is obvious. They didn’t really explain the full story behind some of it, such as the canaan under the ice and what that room was that she was kept in. But for the most part all the loose ends where tied up. I also thought the ending was very well done. A lot of times you have a great anime and the ending doesn’t live up to the rest of it and it ruins the whole thing. In this case it did a fantastic job, giving closure, tying everything together, and still giving us the clip at the end to make us feel as if things were still going on. On top of this the writer put in the bit from the guy reporter which was an interesting piece telling us that he wrote that character after himself and that he thought the ending was good as well, which drastically changed my view of him at the end. Really, a magnificent ending.
